William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office. Hanson received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1922. He did engineering and independent research in geography in the Atacama Desert for three years following his graduation. In 1927 he worked as an engineer in Iceland, and in 1929 he traveled in the Orinoco and Amazon Basins and in the Andes, making a scientific survey for the Carnegie Institute of Washington.
